One of Knoxville’s well-known landmarks is the bright shining Sunsphere.
The Sunsphere was designed in 1982 for the World’s Fair inspired by the theme for the fair that year, “Energy Turns the World.”
The gold shining sphere is meant to represent the energy from the sun and the lower part was originally blue to blend in with the sky.
But Knoxville decided to give one of our trademarks a new makeover!
On October 1st of this year painters will re-paint the bottom half to be blue.
Then in 2024 the city plans on putting a visitors center on the 3rd floor of the Sunsphere.
The construction is supposed to be completely finished by 2024.
