Kelsea Ballerini came to the 2023 CMT Awards with a purpose. The singer opened the ceremony with an emotional speech about gun violence.
The country star paid tribute to the young victims of the recent school shooting in Nashville. Later in the night, she shared the stage with drag queens during a colorful performance.
Speaking about the six victims of Nashville’s Covenant School, Ballerini said, “The community of sorrow over this and the 130 mass shootings in the US this year alone stretches from coast to coast,” as she could been seen shedding tears.
She ended her statement by advocating for “serious action” to “make change for the safety of our kids and our loved ones” and praising music’s “community-building” ability.
