Preston Duffee has been singing and playing music for as long as he can remember, thanks to his father for giving him an acoustic guitar one Christmas.

But it has taken the 21-year-old artist years to sit down and write a song.

In the latest episode of ‘American Idol’ Season 21, Duffee bravely told viewers that he unexpectedly lost his mother to suicide two years ago.

“She just struggled with bipolar and depression, and over time it got harder and harder for her to hide it from us,” Duffee explained.

“That day, we all went to church. We had a cookout after that at the house. All of our friends came. Mom was in a great mood. But as people started trickling out, her mood started to change,” he recalled, sharing the unfortunate story of his mother’s passing. “As I was getting ready for bed, I heard a gunshot. I didn’t know what it was at the time. But then my sister went into her room, and that’s where she found mama.”

Duffee says through this tragedy and the fear of the unknown the thing that helped him persevere and cope was music.

All three judges gave Duffee solid yes’s and sent him on his way to Hollywood.
