We all know the best part of Halloween is the endless amount of candy kids get but unfortunately some of those sweets are still bad for our teeth. Dr. Matthew Messina, a dentist and spokesperson for the American Dental Association explains which ones are the worst for our teeth.

The Worst Candies

  • Sticky Candy – the worst of the worst. Chewy ones like taffy and anything gummy aren’t good because they linger on the teeth, which gives them more time to cause tooth decay. Caramels are also in the group.
  • Sour Candy – They are bad because they contain both candy and acid. The acid breaks down tooth enamel, which is the outer shell that protects teeth.
  • Lollipops – Just like hard candies, these are meant to be enjoyed slowly, meaning teeth are exposed to sugar for a lot longer than they are with treats you can chew quickly. These are also known to cause a tooth fracture if you bite down on one to hard.

The Best Candy

  • Chocolate – Good news is chocolate is actually one of the best when it comes to oral hygiene! This is because it doesn’t linger on teeth for too long, it’s less of a rush for tooth decay than some other candies.
